Summer Reading

We are excited to share our summer One Book, One Grade program for East Islip Middle School! We highly value reading and encourage our students to be life-long readers. This year’s program will require students in each grade level to read the same text over the summer. Our goal is to build a community of readers. When students return to East Islip Middle School in September, the entire school community of students and staff will have a collective starting point for discussions.

The One Book, One Grade initiative will also promote literacy. Students will be expected to work in book clubs discussing and analyzing their books when they return to school in September. We know you will support and encourage your children to read Wonder by R.J. Palacio in Grade 6, Schooled by Gordon Korman in Grade 7 and The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton in Grade 8 and come back to school well prepared to engage with our school community. Students will be provided a copy of the book to borrow over the summer, as well as an assignment to be completed. Both the book and the assignment will be collected during the first days of school in September. The assignment and additional information are available on the district website.

Research has clearly shown that students who read a minimum of four (4) books during the summer do not lose reading skills acquired during the school year. Students are encouraged to read books of their own choosing in addition to the required reading. We encourage you to visit the East Islip Public Library where our town librarians are looking forward to helping you select books. Reading can take you on adventures, broaden your experiences and make you laugh. It can also open new worlds and opportunities that will enhance your life. Together, we can make reading an exciting and integral part of our young people’s lives. I hope you enjoy the chance to read together over the next few months. We wish all this for you as you leave for summer recess.

Have an enjoyable summer and happy reading.
